It’s been thirteen years since Kingdom Heart’s last major console release…but rejoice! Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally upon us!
Kingdom Hearts 3 was announced five years ago. At Microsoft’s E3 showcase they announced that the game will release on January 29, 2019. You can expect new worlds and characters, familiar towns and an abundance of new abilities and summons.
Kingdom Hearts is a series following the main character Sora as he befriends famous Disney characters Donald and Goofy. They embark on an adventure spanning many worlds across the galaxy to find Sora’s friends and protect the universe. There is no shortage of characters from both Disney and Final Fantasy that you meet along the way. Iconic personalities like Mulan, Hercules, Jack Sparrow, Cloud, Sephiroth, Ariel and much more. Some of these characters will be returning in Kingdom Hearts 3 alongside new characters in newly featured worlds. The Frozen and Toy Story additions are two worlds that bring a fresh new take to the franchise.
New Worlds & Mechanics
We have had extended looks into some of these new worlds. We have also been shown new abilities and features assigned to these places that you will explore. Each world has specific gameplay mechanics that are unique to their environment. In Pirates of the Caribbean, you sail the waters firing cannons to sink enemy ships or board their ships for a clash of swords. In the Toy Story world, you are shrunken down to action figure size as you explore Andy’s house. You can use the world assigned giga robot in the toy store to battle enemies or fly up higher on the shelves.
Kingdom Hearts 3 also offers world specific costumes for your characters. For those who have played before, you will recognize the return of the gummi ship – your means of transportation between worlds. The ship is customizable with new attachments and featuring becoming available through progression. Between travels you can dodge obstacles and shoot down enemy ships.
Veteran players will once again battle it out in the Coliseum on Hercules’s world and experience the nostalgia of returning to Traverse Town. The game does have a collector’s edition which features three Bring Arts figures of the three main characters (Sora, Donald, Goofy), an art book, steelbook case and collectible pin. The collector’s edition can be bought for $230 USD. They also announced the Limited Edition KH3 PS4 Pro. Not much information has been shared as to the price and availability of the console however.
If you have a PlayStation 3 I recommend getting Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5, and Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue in order to familiarize yourself with the story and gameplay mechanics. This is a collection of all the Kingdom Hearts series games that have been released over the years across different handheld consoles. In the event you don’t have a PlayStation 3 or are too impatient to play through all those games, then I recommend a summary video on YouTube to get you up to speed! Kingdom Hearts Story Summary
